Why get vaccinated against flu?
Another respiratory infection season is approaching. In recent years, respiratory infections have been occurring earlier in the season than usual. They are often accompanied by co-infections, which can result in more severe and prolonged illness.
It is worth remembering that effective protection is available against infection, as well as against a severe illness and its complications. Vaccination currently remains the most effective means of preventing infectious diseases.
What are the benefits?
Flu vaccination:
- reduces the risk of getting flu, of complications, and of hospitalisation due to flu,
- may reduce the severity of symptoms in in people who become ill despite being vaccinated,
- is an important preventive tool, particularly for people with certain chronic conditions – especially those with heart disease, lung disease (e.g. COPD) or diabetes – for whom flu poses a potentially life-threatening risk,
- protects pregnant women against severe complications, and also helps protect the baby against flu for several months after birth, when they are still too young to be vaccinated themselves,
- may indirectly protect those around you who are more vulnerable to severe flu, such as infants and young children, older people, and people with certain chronic conditions.

We encourage everyone to prepare for the coming respiratory infection season and to to consider other recommended vaccinations as well.
At the same appointment as your flu vaccination you or your child can also be vaccinated against whooping cough (pertussis), pneumococcal disease, shingles (herpes zoster), HPV, hepatitis A and B, diphtheria, tetanus, tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), or RSV.*
