Meningocicci belong to Neisseria meningitis species, called also meningitis diplococci, they cause dangerous infections, like meningitis and sepsis defined as invasive meningococcal disease. Meningococcal infection occurs in all age groups, the biggest number of infections concerns children below 5 years of age. The infection spreads by contact with infected person who may not exhibit symptoms. It is spread, similarly to other diseases, by air, during coughing, sneezing or direct contact, e.g. during kissing, indirectly, e.g. drinking from the same glass.
Meningococcal disease is characterized by violent course, requires early diagnosis and immediate treatment.
