Cataract is a painless progressive clouding of the lens leading to a decrease in vision. Over half a million Poles live with cataract which should qualify them for the surgery.
The main risk factors of cataract development are:

  • Old age
  • Metabolic diseases, e.g. diabetes

  • Connective tissue diseases

Methods of cataract treatment

The only effective method of treating cataract is surgery.
This procedure is called phacoemulsification and consists in crushing clouded lens, removal of fragments from the lens capsule and insertion of intraocular artificial lens into patient’s own lens capsule.


Qualification for the surgery

  • During the qualification appointment for cataract surgery, the doctor diagnoses the disease and refers the patient to the procedure.

  • During preoperative visit strength of the implant is calculated and best expected refraction is chosen.
  • The patient gets referrals to additional ophthalmologic tests and basic tests indispensable for anaesthesiological qualification.
  • During the appointment the doctor prescribes mediation to be used locally as a preventive measure before the surgery.
  • Then with the doctor the date of the surgery is arranged.

Cataract removal surgery
